A teenager who is suffering from a condition that makes her vulnerable to allergies is thankful to her dog for being a lifesaver.
15-year-old Martina Baker is suffering from a rare medical condition called “mast cell activation syndrome” that makes her susceptible to allergies caused by even the most common everyday substances such as heat and water. The allergic reactions, if unchecked, can even result in deathly consequences for the teenager.
Under these circumstances, Martina’s family had decided to get a service dog to help the teenager get through her ordeal. The service dog named Caiomhe was trained to identify the release of histamine from the body, and he is now assisting Martina as an allergy guide.
Caiomhe’s sense of smell is so strong that she can warn the teenager even before she shows any symptoms of allergies.
Martina’s allergic condition started at the age of 13 when she suffered from hives. From that time onwards, she required an EpiPen shot to control the reaction three times a week. From being a normal girl, Martina became allergic to almost every smell other than oxygen.
Martina says that because of her severe vulnerability to allergies, Caiomhe is proving to be very valuable for her. Once Caiomhe smells the increasing level of histamine, the dog then stands in front of the girl, warning her about possible allergens in the environment that may cause her discomfort.
Martina says that her condition has become more manageable now because of her service dog. Martina had to face allergic attacks every day before Caiomhe, but now she can have a life that is quite close to normal. The allergic attacks that used to be a frequent occurrence for the teenager have now receded to around once every four to six months.
Service dogs who can identify increased histamine in the body are believed to be real lifesavers because they can alert the owner to the possibility of an anaphylactic shock.
