Rule DogGood Communication Holds the Key to Internet Marketing Success
When you first start to get into Internet marketing and test the waters a little, it's easy to become overwhelmed. You've maybe already skimmed over a bunch of articles and forum posts that are filled with information on how to be the next "big thing". The items on these lists probably all appear inconsistent. One list will claim "patience" is the secret to becoming an IM success. Another is going to state that you need to have a great deal of business savvy. You'll also see a few that will tell you that you need to be truly creative if you wish to succeed. And, of course, you can't forget about all of the people claiming that all you have to do is pay for their software if you wish to be the next big name in Internet marketing!
Here's what's true: All of these things matter (okay, maybe not the software, but the other things). You have to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you wish to achieve success. None of these things will matter much, however, if you are unable to communicate well with your target audience.
There is more to effective communication than publishing an amazing sales page. You can hire a highly competent copywriter to do that for you. A pretty web site and extensive FAQ are not what you need for effective communication. A seasoned designer and writer can do those things. If you wish to be an effective communicator, you need to acquire interpersonal communication skills, not merely direct copy writing. So, what do you need to do that?
1. Make sure an e-mail doesn't sit unreplied to for over 24 hours. We aren't trying to joke with you. You don't need to write a lengthy response for every email. All you have to do is inform the sender that you have read the email and will be responding to it in more detail shortly. When you do this, try to include a a portion of the original e-mail. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the automated replies that other IMers use.
2. Pick up the phone. Try to not be a call screener. Whenever your telephone starts ringing, answer it by the third ring. Make sure you do this even if the Caller ID tells you that the call is from a person that you truly do not wish to talk to. You might be happy to learn that there is one exemption to this specific rule. You don't need to answer your phone around the clock. Instead, simply set definite "business" hours during which you can take calls. These hours should be displayed conspicuously on your web site and stated in your voice mail message as well. And, naturally, each caller who leaves a message deserves a call back.
3. Make sure that the individuals you send messages and emails to actually receive those messages and emails. This shows them that you care about your correspondence with them. It will endear you further if you take some time to say something like, "Is there anything that I can be more clear about?" so that, if they have inquiries, you can answer them.
